Dry Roses and Diary

About This Book

This novel is a confessional account based on the diary entries of the central protagonist, focusing on his latest affair, which gradually becomes an all-consuming obsession and a doomed passion, culminating in a completely chemical addiction. Finding himself in Shanghai, he falls in love with a woman, and his desire to possess her becomes a devastating fixation.

The book recreates the enchanting atmosphere of Shanghai, Hong Kong, Korea and Thailand, with the fascinating, reckless and unholy life that comes with it.

Above all, this is a heartfelt story of sexual obsession, devoid of the usual clichés and pornographic aftertaste; it describes a fatal attraction concisely but in bold relief, without vulgarity but with a charming sadness and humour.

About The Author

The story you are about to read, with minor technical edits, is published by the widow of the central protagonist, who passed away in January 2024.

"We met at Polux by Paul Pairet, a French bistro in Xintiandi, which is in the French Concession, where I usually brought girls on a first date. I was armed with a heavy bouquet of sultry roses. An old tradition, obviously. I wanted to make an impression, obviously. She was lost, so I went out to meet Her. We went into the restaurant — She went first, of course, with hips swaying. I went in one step behind. I think this is where I’ll describe Her, so it will make sense what an impression She made on me in the first moments of our acquaintance. She was about thirty years old. Her face was beautifully strange and exciting and wickedly beautiful. That beauty was in Her bold, dark eyes and long lashes, the Roman nose with a crook, a scattering of large freckles, full, proud lips the colour of my roses, a clean, straight forehead with no particular features, straight, golden hair, tanned and broad shoulders and regal hips."
